CBC Sharing the View 2014 jury selected Monika Wright as one of 12 artists for the 2014 calendar project. The project, now in its fourth year, is so much more than just a calendar. It is a community builder and fund raiser for Feed Nova Scotia. Twelve artists from across the province have been selected and their paintings will be auctioned as part of the fund raising event. The paintings will be touring the province and with a gala event to be held in November at the Maritime Museum in Halifax. "Ocean Playground" – Monika Wright, Artist
Nova Scotia, Canada’s Ocean Playground is depicted here with its pebbly beaches, the hundreds of lakes, rocks of many colours and textures and deep blue ocean. We play, work and create our lives in the fresh air of nature that surrounds us, even in the city. These geographical elements connect us to this province; the community of people connects us to each other.
Artists and artisans in this province are among the best in the world. They deserve to be celebrated and promoted as the valuable resource they are to this province as they spread their beauty and joy, their hardships and the courage it takes to overcome them. They are Individual in spirit and yet, deeply supportive in the spirit of community. This is Nova Scotia.

Well it was a ride, a roller coaster of emotions ranging from exciting to sheer panic. The thought of creating a painting in front of a life audience, and doing it in 20 minutes - not 20 hours - was certainly a challenge. And it was also an incredible growing experience for me as an artist. It taught me to practice spontaneity and abandon, to trust my instincts and admittedly, let go of my mistakes.
I was completely stunned when my name was called in round one for Art Battle 47 because that meant I'd be continuing to paint later in the evening against the winners of the next two rounds. And, lucky me, I was announced the winner of Art Battle 47 at about 11 pm on the night of March 22nd, 2013. That put me in the next round, the finals for Nova Scotia on June 22nd. This picture was taken at the finals, where I painted in the first round again and had a blast. Mary Garaoutte was the final winner that evening. A big congratulations to her and best wishes for the next phase in Toronto!
Here are some pictures from the night. To all those who came out to see the 'show' and to support me, a great big 'Thank You!'
